EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY GOOD

I would like to publicly explore the viability of the concept of our     own schools here in Columbus.  As many of you may know several of us worked on an application for a charter school for 7th through 12th grades here in Columbus.  We were unsuccessful as the application (click here to read application), was found incomplete/inadequate by the Public Education Commission.  However, they did invite us to reapply in 2012, which we plan to do.

When we think of schools we generally think of government providing education to our children.  However, schools serve a much larger role in society.  I hope that we can develop a forum here to discuss education and community issues as related to schools.  Following is an excerpt of an article on charter schools and community development.  I have included the electronic source for the full document which you can down load from your internet.

Charter Schools and Community Development:

The Economic Impact of New Charter Schools

Schools have always played a vital role in a community’s well being. Their primary charge – the education of young people – is one of a number of important contributions schools can make to the development of vibrant and healthy communities. Schools can serve as a central neighborhood resource for any number of social functions and services. Schools can also positively influence local economic development by creating a stable environment in which families, businesses and other community activities can thrive. As we consider the creation of new charter schools, particularly in under served communities, it is worth examining the ways in which a school – and its new facility – can improve both the physical and social capital of the surrounding neighborhood. Here we explore ways in which the creation of a high performing charter school can directly impact economic development in a community. We review the existing literature, and draw on Jonathan Weiss’ “Public Schools and Economic Development” as a useful starting point.
